Amanda visits Poland

by Rick Johansen

The modestly talented #AmandaHolden is trending on twitter. Apparently, she has been to a refugee camp in Poland to meet with Ukrainians displaced by Vladimir Putin’s murderous invasion of their country. Christ: how much misery can people be forced to suffer? I just hope she didn’t sing ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ to them.

Is there any beginning to Ms Holden’s talent? Apart her relentless genius at self-promotion, she is the morning DJ – presenter, actually – on Heart’s breakfast show, a judge on Britain’s Got Talent and a singer. And now she’s in Poland, drawing attention to a terrible situation that has been drawing our attention for weeks now.

I suppose I shouldn’t question her motives for visiting Poland since I don’t know what they are but she has at least had a pop at home secretary, Priti Patel, referring to her as a “right little cunt who hates immigrants” (I may have misheard some of the words) and pointing out that desperate would be refugees need to complete a 35 pages of paperwork, as well as proving their utility bills and bank statements. I mean, when you’re leaving your home and all your possessions, probably never to return, the first thing you will remember to take with you will be utility bills. Christ on a bicycle: what have we become? It’s lucky for Patel that she wasn’t in charge of the immigration system when her parents scrambled to get here from Uganda when Idi Amin wanted to kill them. I suppose that was different.

I’ll give Ms Holden the benefit of the doubt, even if her story does seem not dissimilar to the time when Gazza went to visit Raoul Moat before the latter blew his own brains out and, if that’s right, she had the right motives, as did Gazza.

What she should now do is open the doors of her plush house and allow Ukrainians to live in it with her and her family. That would be more than a gesture, wouldn’t it?
