A quiet night in?

by Rick Johansen

I was expecting a quiet evening in tonight. Nothing much happening in the world, is there?  I’ve had some decent exercise today, I’m tired now. An early night beckons. But hang on: what’s happening in Poland? Putin has launched an attack on Polish soil, the village of Przewodó near the Ukraine border. The G19 is meeting, everyone is cosying up to China, Russia is bogged down in its war against Ukraine. This is provocation of the highest order. Putin is trolling us, asking us, “What are you made of?” Maybe I should open a bottle of something in case tomorrow never comes?

No, that’s silly. Isn’t it? It’s not exactly World War Three. Oh, maybe it isn’t silly. Poland is a member of NATO. An attack on one member is an attack on all of us. Jesus.

The first thing NATO will do, at breakneck speed, is to check the facts. We know that Putin’s Russia will deny any attack. Putin muddy the water. But hang on. We know Russia has been attacking Ukraine today. Ukraine didn’t retaliate by attacking Poland, did it?

How dangerous is this? Very. Is this a threat to world peace? Of course, it is. Am I exaggerating? Of course, I’m bloody not. Putin has threatened NATO today and this might not end well. I’ll have that early night tonight and hope I wake up tomorrow? If I don’t, it’s been nice knowing you.
