The Road To Nowhere.

by Rick Johansen

‘Let’s stay on the road to a stronger economy’ is the slogan in the Conservative Party’s latest pre election poster, as we begin a five month campaign up to the next general election. The Conservatives will spend three times as much as Labour as they try to pull the wool over our eyes but if this poster is the best they can come up with, maybe Labour needn’t be so worried after all.

To me, the poster should read ‘ The Road To Nowhere’ and if transferred to TV, accompanied by Talking Heads’ tune of the same name.

As ever, we are living through a debt-fuelled mini recovery in the run up to the big day. Britons have been borrowing more since 2012 and before Christmas 2014, they took out another £1.25b in credit. House prices are rising at unsustainable rate, thanks to Osborne’s ‘Help To Buy’ scheme and everything points to another downturn once the election is out of the way.

Quite apart from the lies being spouted by Cameron. His poster states that the deficit has been halved and he trumpets this as a great success story, but before the election he criticised the outgoing Chancellor for his plans to ‘only’ reduce the deficit by 50%. Worse still, Cameron’s 50% is pure trickery. The deficit is down by a third. You can’t trust this Prime Minister.

And you can’t trust this Prime Minister with the NHS either. Operations are being rationed, waiting times are up, satisfaction levels are down and privatisation is going ahead at full speed. Cameron is an ideologist, not a moderniser, and given half the chance both he and Gideon ‘Call Me George’ Osborne they will shrink the state to next to nothing. Meals on wheels? Cut by two thirds. Sure Start? Being shut in record numbers. Zero hours contracts, Mickey Mouse ‘self-employed’ jobs and poverty pay – the awful legacy of this Tory government in which some Liberals have jobs.

I think of a little known tune by Jason and the Scorchers where they sing “I’m going nowhere, but at least I know the way.” Cameron in a nutshell.
