The Friday Music Shuffle (21.2.25)

by Rick Johansen

As winter slips slowly into spring, at least one thing is a constant: the Friday Music Shuffle. As my loyal reader will know, every Friday I set my music machine free and it selects ten random songs from my collection. Then, excitingly, I tell you what has been chosen and by clicking on the title you can listen and even sing along.

I hope you do play along and find some music you like.

  1. America The Beautiful by Neil Young. Pretty amazing this, from 2006’s Living With War.
  2. Yours Is No Disgrace by Yes. Back to 1971, rock’s greatest year, for this near ten minute classic from The Yes Album. Great stuff but Jon Anderson’s vocals are better than great.
  3. Wheels by Emmylou Harris and Jonathan Edwards. Well, this is lovely and it’s from Emmylou’s best (IMHO) LP Elite Hotel.
  4. Swing by José González. With a name like that you can only be … er … Swedish and what a lovely track from 2021’s Local Valley. Useful for folk who think the only thing he has ever made is the admittedly wonderful Heartbeats.
  5. Fountain Of Good Fortune by Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. A banger from this excellent Aussie band’s 2017 EP French Press.
  6. Moment’s Notice by John Coltrane. Late to the party as ever, I have only recently discovered John Coltrane. This brilliant track is from the epic 1957 LP Blue Train.
  7. I Go To Extremes by Billy Joel. Average Joel from the mostly above average 1989 Storm Front album.
  8. Problem With You by Daryl Hall and Nick Waterhouse (Live from Daryl’s House). Unmistakably, Daryl, which is on his 2022 compilation album Before After. Noice.
  9. Bring Da Ruckus by Wu-Tang Clan. Absolutely fan-fucking-tastic, from 1993’s 36 Chambers and it’s still sounds so relevant.
  10. Mourning Sound by Grizzly Bear.  Seriously gorgeous joint from 2017’s Painted Ruins.

This week’s Desert Island Disc was going to be Bring Da Ruckus until Mourning Sound by Grizzly Bear came along right at the end.

That’s all there is, my people. Have a good week till next week.
