That Friday Music Shuffle (20/7)

by Rick Johansen

Blimey, is it Friday already? In between myriad domestic chores, I have to allow some ‘me’ time today and of course as it’s Friday, I am going to retire, albeit briefly, to my Man Cave, attach my elderly and obsolete iPod to my bank of Marshall speakers and let it choose ten random songs for my weekly music shuffle. I know you haven’t waited all week for this one.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.

1. Some People Are Crazy by John Martyn. Older folk may recall the Beeb’s Rock Goes to College show back in the day. This great tune from the late, great John Martyn was recorded live at some college or other. Class. And he dedicated the tune to Margaret Thatcher.

2. Mind Eraser, No Chaser by Them Crooked Vultures. Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones. Couldn’t be bettered.

3. Four Wheel Drive by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Seriously underrated hard rock from the well fed Canadian boys.

4. Schoolboy Crush by the Average White Band. The best blue eyes of them all.

5. Wonder by Naughty Boy feat Emili Sande. From the epic Our Version of Events, my favourite Sande tune. Gorgeous.

6. Spinning Around by Kylie Minogue. Despite the fact that Kylie doesn’t exactly have the best singing voice and that she always sings in a ludicrous American accent, she’s made some great records and this is one of the greatest.

7. Third World Man by Steely Dan. Last track on the titanic Gaucho album.

8. Light a Rainbow (CJ Stone edit) by Tukan. Nice bit of House from one of my Dave Pearce compilation albums.

9. Madazula by Deep Forest. Epic world music by the French duo.

10. Tongue by REM. Greatness from the Monster album.

That’s all, folks!
