Shaun Wright, the police commissioner for South Yorkshire, has finally had the decency to resign and not before time.
Well, that’s that then. But it isn’t, is it?
1400 children were abused in Rotherham. That’s not allegedly abused. It’s actually abused. Wright should have gone ages ago because it all happened on his watch but if this represents and end game, then no one can be happy. Certainly not the victims, almost none of whom have had justice. It is clear that there are still evil, predatory perverts out there. Wright cannot be the only fall guy. He has resigned his public position. Those who did the abusing need to be hunted down and banged up.
Was this really left to fester because people at the top were worried that the abusers were Pakistani men and the authorities might be accused of racism if they were tracked down? What? This is not political correctness gone mad: it’s total madness. I am very much opposed to the term ‘political correctness’ anyway. It covers a multitude of sins and imagined sins. It’s a generalisation that might include the Rotherham abuse, which we know happened, and the banning of Christmas in various towns and cities, which never happened.
Having known and worked with people from many races and religions and cultures, I can honestly say I do not believe one of them would condone child abuse. Whilst I do have issues with certain cultures in certain religions, the people I know and knew were like the rest of us in almost every way. I am sure they would not these things swept under the carpet, so let’s close our eyes and hope it all goes away.
Whilst I welcome Wright’s belated resignation, I note that he does not apologise which I think he should have done. His resignation is well-crafted and there is no suggestion that he either did anything wrong or that he was negligent and did nothing at all.
I cannot believe that in this day and age 1400 children were abused and nothing was done about it.
I don’t care what it costs but this wrong needs to be righted and righted now. The true victims deserve nothing less.
