Seconds beaten at Lodway

by Rick Johansen

The seconds suffered an emphatic defeat last Saturday at Lodway.

The home team batted first and scored a matchwinning 235 on a decent wicket.

Having deserted Meaney, Nigel brought his new civil partner Henry Winterman, the cigar millionaire, to play for the team.

Winterman steamed in off a short run and was a real menace to the fielders as the ball pinged regularly to the boundary.

The Sheriff, fresh from being axed by Bristol Manor Farm, captained the side and turned in a very impressive bowling display. His son Jamie also played.

The sound of barrels being scraped resulted in the shock appearance of Taff Russell who has long been overshadowed in the sporting department by his bookend of a son. Taff amazingly took a wicket too later on but was clueless in the batting department.

The game was over as a spectacle when Nigel opened the batting with Taff Junior.  Predictably, neither lasted long with Nigel being caught by the slip fielder’s beer gut.

The Sheriff clubbed a few lusty blows and Ian Semple kept an end going before Winterman came into bat.

Winterman decided the best policy was to swing the bat and hope for the best which came off as he bludgeoned a few sixes.

Prior to the game, the Sheriff had instructed his umpires not to give anyone out, something that was ignored by Nigel who had the temerity of giving the Sheriff out LBW when, the great man claimed, the ball would have missed a second set of stumps.

Tragically, the Gifford fell a mere 120 runs short of the Lodway total and the away team rushed back to the pub for the far more important business of getting bollocksed.

Man of the match – Calum ‘Call me Calum’ Meaney-May for a sensational 2 which almost changed the game.
