Once again the village second XI came within a hair’s breadth of victory against Old Bristolians at the field.
Old Bristolians batted first and were held to a modest 313 by the village attack. Calum ‘May’ Meaney made two blinding catches in a fine effort from a youthful village side led by John Black.
The village reply faltered a little although there were good efforts from Nigel’s brother Stefan with a career best 13, a lifetime best 17 by Meaney including a series of fours.
The wickets were tumbling until, of all people, Jack Burton came to the middle. With a combination of good shots and wild slogging, Burton’s first 40 were all in boundaries. He finished on a creditable 45.
Ian Semple scored a good 18 before the final pair, the Sheriff and Harry Black, came to the wicket.
The Sheriff clubbed an unbeaten 31 before Harry’s slogging came to an end and the village were all out for 211, just 102 runs short.
So a moral victory for the village then.
The highlight was Burton’s 45, the lowlight was when Burton demanded Semple give him his sweaty ‘box’ after he was out.
Man of the match – Sharon Stephens sumptuous buffet.
