Hello autumn. I haven’t been waiting for you.

by Rick Johansen

Autumn just crept up on me.

One minute, I was flopping on the sun lounger, enjoying the late rays of summer, the next I woke up and it was pitch dark. And cold. And wet.

When did that happen?

I finished proper work in June (May 16 technically, since I took loads of holidays so I could leave as early as possible) and it was a summer to die for. May was good, so was June. July was warm and so was August, especially when we got to Corfu and then September was fine too. October has come like a bullet out of the blue.

Starting a little part time job gave me the broadest possible hint that the times they were a-changing when I headed off to work at 6.30 am and it was pitch dark. I had not seen 6.30 am for a long time and it was a bit of a jolt. And it was cold too. Cycling to work was not the pleasure it might have been a few weeks ago and it certainly wasn’t today when the heavens opened for around 20 seconds, I kid you not, and I was soaked to the skin.

I find that the autumn is literally a depressing season. I see no merit in the short dark days and the cooled down version of the same weather we get all year round. Of course, there isn’t a great deal we can do about it, short of hibernating (this is not an option for me, yet) but I do have a slight envy of the tortoise lifestyle, as anyone who has ever worked with me will know well.

I decided to play golf this afternoon and the signs of autumn were everywhere. The course was full of leaves, the colours were stunning and my golf was tired and listless, rather like me. And there was almost no one else there, the fair-weather golfers have understandably decided to wait for fair weather. See you next summer, guys.

I treat autumn and winter as seasons you just have to get through but as time marches on in life I suppose I should find a way to embrace them instead of spending six months waiting for spring.

I am reasonably confident my lottery numbers are due to come up this week in which case I shall no longer have to concern myself with the nuisance of having to work for a living. As I get older, in the autumn of my life so to speak, I really do feel like the world owes me a living which of course if patently doesn’t.

Come and join me in the Maldives next week to celebrate my winnings, why don’t you?

I feel the same way about autumn, Rick – beautiful scenery, but for us here also cold and wet with the darkness closing in. Brrr. My remedy – a female one – I bought a new fall coat!
