Flying the flag

by Rick Johansen

‘#BBC you’re a fucking disgrace, nasty, small minded, petty, hate filled cretinous, small brained, cunts, every single fucking one of you, quislings’, posts a bot on X, the social media outlet previously known as twitter. That’s the Beeb told, then. Serves them right for broadcasting the Proms, I suppose, and showing various audience members waving the EU flag. Even the far right Pound Shop Oswald Mosley, Richard ‘Thick Dick’ Tice, leader of the Deform Party, is angry: “Last Night of the Proms before the unpatriotic Remoaners took it over with their ghastly bureaucratic EU flags…..” Oh puh-lease, mate. Give us a break.

We’ve left the EU, thanks to multimillionaire grifters like Tice, but despite the best efforts of Rishi Sunak, Suella Braverman et al, this is still, just about a free country. And he, along with some perma-angry X booner, loses his shit about people being free to do what they want. Obviously, we should treat Tice with the contempt he so richly deserves, but let’s try to be serious for one moment. These are the words that would not look out of place if delivered by an actual fascist.

One reason I opposed Brexit was precisely because of my patriotism. I want my country to do well and for us to be at the top table for world events (like Churchill did) and Brexit has meant the precise opposite. Wanting the country to become weaker, poorer and lose influence does not strike me was being worthy of a few verses of Rule Britannia.

What gets me about people like Tice is that they actually won. They actually got the Brexit they lied so hard to get. Us Remoaners lost and most of us accept it, albeit reluctantly. So, why are they still so angry and upset, poor snowflakes, with those of us who lost out because of Brexit, which means essentially the vast majority of the population?

I am not calling for us to rejoin the EU. That’s not going to happen any time soon, if at all during my lifetime. We need to make the best a bad job. A better deal with Europe is probably all we can look to. But the perma-angry Brexiters seem to need something to stay angry about so a few people waving flags around, well that makes the likes of Dick Tice furious, if only in a pretend kind of way. And it’s because they have nothing else to say.

Telling people not to wave flags, particularly harmless ones like the EU one, strikes me as particularly desperate because it’s a pathetic attempt to keep the Faragista demographic angry. If they can no longer pretend the EU is the thing holding us back, they have nothing.

Tice and his far right goons have nothing left bar their shouting. At least, people who doubted it can now see that the Brexit movement was led by the extremes of politics. Not everyone who voted for Brexit was from the far right, but everyone from the far right voted for Brexit.

Once they stop us waving flags, what and who will they come for next? Books? Journalists? Humble bloggers? History shows that this is exactly what comes next and why the likes of Tice must be defeated by way of argument and at the ballot box.
