I am not one of those who believe that Britain is, as they put it, going to the dogs. For all our faults, and apart from the weather, there is nowhere I’d rather live. But after watching Crimewatch, I probably shouldn’t be writing anything at all.
Tonight’s stories included the sexual assault of a six year old child – yes, you read that right: a six year old child – and some distraction burglaries on older people, one as old as 94. As well as not believing that Britain is going to the dogs, I am not a hanger and a flogger either, but it’s hard to convince myself, never mind anyone else, that these sickos should be banged up for years instead of being hanged by their testicles from the nearest high building. Tomorrow, I shall calm down and recognise that actually I do want these people banged up for the rest of their natural lives because what preceded their natural lives was not very natural at all.
I can remember when my own children were six years of age. I went to their school sports days and saw lots of other six year old children. At no point did I, or anyone else present, look upon these innocent children as sex objects and it sickens me to the core to imagine that there are those who do. I hope the miscreant in tonight’s show hands himself into the police smartish because his life won’t be worth living, if he has any life at all, once people work out who he is.
And then the distraction burglars, knocking on the door of vulnerable older people and pretending to be police officers whilst their accomplices steal money. Steal money from people who lived through the Second World War and maybe even fought in it too. Steal money from frail old people who could not possibly fight back. In the words of Joe Walsh, ‘You can’t argue with a sick mind.’
Happily, filth like these people are relatively few and far between. Most people treasure and guard children from the excesses of modern life, most people respect senior citizens and want them to enjoy the fruits of a lifetime’s labour in retirement.
I am not really interested in excuses. I could not care less whether the child molester had a difficult upbringing or the distraction burglar has a drug habit. Both scenarios might play a part in the rehabilitation of the perverts and drug addicts but more and more I have a zero tolerance attitude towards the dregs of society who prey on the young, the old and the vulnerable.
We read and hear far more about the degenerates of society because of the changing media and the facts are that there are no more child molesters now than there were before the internet. It just feels like it. And there were always cheap and petty thieves who always found justification for their thievery, if only to themselves.
I’ll turn back into a soggy liberal tomorrow, but I still want these vile individuals round up and shoved in prison for a very long time so they get as long as possible to consider what they have done.
