THE FRIDAY MUSIC SHUFFLE (3.7.26)

by Rick Johansen

And now we’re in July, less than two months away from autumn, so what better time to listen to the music?

It’s Friday so it must be time for my weekly music shuffle where my music device selects ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen.

You mission, should you choose to accept it, is to listen to the songs and, even better, to sing along. And you can do that simply by clicking on each title.

I hope you find something you like.

  1. Up All Night by Take That. We begin with a joint from the band’s 2009 LP The Circus, co-written by my old friend Ben Weaver who now plies his trade in The Script. True story.
  2. Walking In Daylight by Cosmic Cathedral. Just the slightest contrast here, then, with the best part of nine minutes of Prog Rock from the band’s very excellent 2025 album Deep Water.
  3. I Don’t Mind by Kongos. The sons of 1970’s rocker John with a decent track from their 2016 LP Egomaniac. Definitely shades of the old man on this one.
  4. Oh Baby by LCD Soundsystem. What a great band they remain. This from 2017’s very fine American Dream.
  5. Time Was by Wishbone Ash. And now we go back to the year of our lord 1972 for a lengthy but worthwhile joint from the band’s epic LP Argus.
  6. I’m Always Chasing Rainbows by Harry Nilsson. Who knew the great Harry could have such great taste in old music? This beauty from his superb LP A Touch More Schmilsson In The Night.
  7. Fire In The Cockpit by Public Service Broadcasting. Absolutely brilliant from their essential 2024 album The Race For Space. No one sounds like them.
  8. Superstylin’ by Groove Armada. Now we find ourselves back in 2001 and the band’s first, very excellent’ single.
  9. Light by Michael Kiwanuka. Such a gorgeous song from a great singer. This from 2019’s lush Kiwanuka.
  10. Bittim Ama Tamamlanmadim by Gaye Su Akyol. I can’t speak, or read, a word of Turkish but I so love Gaye Su Akyol. This from her 2020 LP Yort Savul: İSYAN MANİFESTOSU!

This week’s Desert island Disc, by a short head, is Superstylin’ by Groove Armada.

Have a good week till next week!
