That Friday Music Shuffle (4 May 2018)

by Rick Johansen

It’s time to dust off the old iPod, plug it into my vast array of speakers (one, actually) within the depths of my Man Cave and set it free to do what it wants.

Yes, it’s that time of the week again.

Welcome, my friends, to the show that never ends.

1. I’ll be there (if you ever want me) by the Blue Ridge Rangers. Classic Ray Price country tune, played here by the Blue Ridge Rangers who are, in fact, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s John Fogerty. Magnifico.

2. In the Garden by John Fogerty. Some random shuffle, as Mr Fogerty is back with a belter from his Deja Vu All Over Again record.

3. John Barleycorn Must Die by Traffic. Simply wonderful version of the old folk music classic. Steve Winwood never sounded better. This is so English.

4. Hello Hooray by Alice Cooper. Alice Cooper’ best album was Billion Dollar Babies, released a mere 45 years ago, from whence this and many other Cooper classics came.

5. All of my Life by Diana Ross. Motown classic from the lovely Ms Ross.

6. It’s My Life by the Animals. Forget House of the Rising Sun, this is, by miles, my favourite Animals tune. “It’s my life and I’ll do what I want.”

7. Cut Right Through by Cicada. Decent bit of dance music by an artist/band about whom I know absolutely zilch.

8. They Gotta Quit Kicking My Dog Around by Terry Hall and Mushtaq. Absolutely wonderful from The Hour of Two Lights album in 2003 and our Tel has not made any new music since. More’s the pity.

9. Person to Person by the Average White Band. Well, they’re not average, they’re not white, but they are one helluva band.

10. Soubour by Songhoy Blues. The magnificent Songhoys, who had to escape islamist murderers in Mali who wanted to ban music (as you do), have to be seen to be believed. And their Music In Exile album is SO good.

That’s all, folks!
