Friday (Music Shuffle) on my mind (30/9)

by Rick Johansen

“Do you like good music?” asked Arthur Conley. You bet I like good music, as I also like music which others might not regard as good. Live from the Man Cave, here comes the Friday Music Shuffle, being played at full volume.

1. Bobby Fame by Talc. This was on last week’s too, from the amazing Sit Down Think record. Worth hearing again.

2. Last Train to Clarkesville by the Monkees. Did you know this was an anti-Vietnam war tune? Oh yes. “And I don’t know if I’m ever coming home.”

3. One Clear Moment by Little Feat. Craig Fuller sings lead on this one from the Let It Roll record, post Lowell George. I don’t care for the production which is a little antiseptically clean but the rhythm section is hotter than hell.

4. Out of Control by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Latter day CSN&Y from Looking Forward, this one is all about Neil.

5. Excuse my French by Caro Emerald. All the way from the Netherlands…

6. For those about to rock (we salute you) by AC/DC. I hope they retire soon and leave us with memories like this from Who Made Who.

7. Who’ll Stop the Rain by John Fogerty. From the wonderful Premonition live album, the old boy plays the old CCR classic what he wrote, as Ernie Wise might have said (one for the kids, there).

8. Future by Todd Rundgren. His Liars album is a career high. Spoil yourself and buy it. You won’t regret it.

9. That Was Then, This Is Now by the Monkees. Bang average, bog standard latter-day Monkees, nowhere near the standard of their early stuff or even their new album Good Times, which is actually staggeringly good.

10. Moving On by Bad Company. Cracking stuff from the greatest British rock singer ever IMHO.
