Depp v Rooney

by Rick Johansen

Forgive me if you think I haven’t been updating you enough on the court cases involving Johnny Depp v Coleen Rooney and Amber Heard v Rebekah Vardy. I’m a little hazy on the details if I’m honest although I have heard of Mrs Rooney and Mrs Vardy by virtue of their marriages to top footballers. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, less so, although I understand that they are well known actors. Either way, there’s an awful lot of media coverage out there.

That I have not been following the court cases is probably my bad, especially since I don’t know what the hell either case is about. But I have noted that every single morning people with far too much time on their hands are queuing outside the respective court rooms in order to get a sniff of the action. At least the entertainment is free, I suppose.

A quick browse through a few on-line newspapers, as well as the Sun and Mail, indicates that plenty of people really are interested in the stories, otherwise they would not be buying those scabby scandal sheets or justifying the clickbait practices at the lower end off the media.

I cannot imagine a single circumstance in which I would be remotely interested in any of these people’s former private lives. And I don’t know why anyone would be. I know that., for example, Mr Depp plays a character in Pirates of the Caribbean, a movie series that easily passed me by. Ms Heard has appeared in countless shows and movies, not one of which I have heard of never mind seen. Because of their wealth brought about by their fame, they can afford to conduct a very public, embarrassing and costly court case in front of a world that appears to be more interested in them than I am.

By the same token, Vardy and Rooney are famous because of who they married, not because of any special talents. I find it positively weird that they are in court over something apparently so trivial. Could they not have gone out for a curry and sorted things out in private? Even if some Paparazzi prick with a camera filmed the outcome, what would be the story? Two WAGS go out for a curry. I mean, who cares about that? No, it must be more than that. It must be a desperate thirst for fame. Better to be in the papers for anything rather than nothing.

Everyone who buys a newspaper or clicks onto the Depp/Rooney stories in contributing to this stuff, just like I did in the interests of research. And there is a market for celebrity scandal. Quite a big one. Whether it’s the royals or footballers’ wives, we’re always interested. They weren’t chatting about it in the pub the other night, but there’s always time, I suppose.
