9/9 Music Shuffle

by Rick Johansen

Friday night is music night.

It’s time for a self-indulgent music mix. The iPod is set to shuffle, my man cave is all miked up. What’s next?

1. Guns of Brixton by the Clash. Live from here to eternity. Undoubtedly, one of the most important bands of all time.

2. You’ve Got A Friend by James Taylor. Classic Carole King cover (her version appears on Tapestry) from Mud Slide Slim and the New Horizon.

3. Ekue Ekue by Deep Forest. Simply magnificent dance/electronica music with added African themes and voices.

4. Cocaine by JJ Cale. Accept no substitute (version of this song, I mean).

5. The Six Teens by the Sweet. Not their best tune, or best production for that matter with the vocals far too high in the mix.

6. Tow the Line by Lindisfarne. Forgettable folk ditty from Newcastle’s finest.

7. Buck’s Boogie by Blue Oyster Cult. On your feet or on your knees. Some classic live Cult here.

8. High Civilisation by the Bee Gees. The semi-strangulated vocals of the late Robin Gibb are to the fore in this excellent mid period Bee Gee tune.

9. Be With Me by the Beach Boys. Mid-period Beach Boys this time. A little overblown, too much going on, not exactly I Get Around, thank God.

10. Spanish Dancer by Joe Walsh. And finally, from Walsh’s most recent album Analog Man this little gem.

Until next time…
