Wake Up With Nick Day!

by Rick Johansen

When I first saw the headline, “Wake Up With Nick Day”, my immediate reaction was that I’d take a rain check on that one. But looking beyond the headline the news was all good. He’s only on the radio! And BBC radio at that.

Nick Day, Bristol Rovers PA man, co-presenter of BCFM radio’s brilliant ‘Midweek Sports Bar’, businessman and all round good guy will be on Radio Bristol’s “Early Breakfast” tomorrow morning.

Actually, this is far from being Nick’s Radio Bristol debut because for some years he has been a key newspaper reviewer on the show’s flagship Breakfast show and his banter with hosts Steve Lefevre and Laura Rawlings alone is worth tuning in for, with the blonde bombshell (Nick!) often giving as good as he gets.

The line-up for the first show is a bit of a mystery but I can reveal, not really exclusively, that one of his guests is none other than Ben Mark Weaver. My loyal reader may have noticed that I have referred before to the brilliant Mr Weaver who just happens to be Take That’s guitar player and the co-writer of the number one hit single “These Days”, as well as other TT tunes like “Up All Night” and “Hold Up A Light”. And the beauty of it all is that Ben is a local lad, a local success story, who retains both his local accent and his all-round modesty.

The show is on at 5.00 am which is not my best time on a Saturday morning, but rest assured there is a listen again feature on which you can listen for the first time (and again if you enjoy it that much). And there is something else I expect you will hear at some point in the show: a tune by Deacon Blue, the popular beat combo outfit from Scotland who just happen to be Mr Day’s musical heroes of choice.

I am always pleased when talent and hard work is appreciated and no one has worked harder at getting this opportunity than Nick. As we all know, he is a top man whose charitable efforts and good work often get overlooked, but certainly not by little Oskar Pycroft, the loveable little Bristol City fan who needed money raised in order to have a potentially life-changing operation and of course the people of Stoke Gifford in general and the family and friends of Ben Hiscox, so tragically killed in a freak football accident, who Nick was there for in their hours of need. I, along with many others, could go on for a long time about Nick Day.

Of course, I am biased because Nick is my mate and you always want your mates to succeed so that alone would be reason enough for wanting him to succeed, but the fact that he is SO good means I am happy that he has earned his shot at a station which such a proud history of promoting local talent as Radio Bristol.

And Nick: you’d better be good after this build up. I’ve spread the word long and wide that you are the best thing since sliced bread! Good luck, not that you’ll need it!
