Well, the day has finally arrived and I’m off to see Toto in Hammersmith tonight. “Ugh, Toto: that eighties American soft rock band?” has been the reaction of some, to which I reply that these are some of the greatest musicians who have ever lived.

Three in particular, the late Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather and David Paich were, essentially, in a band of which Michael Jackson was lead singer. Listen to Thriller and you listen to Toto. Human Nature was written by Steve Porcaro, Toto’s keyboard player. The classic album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs featured Toto playing and writing. Look and listen everywhere and you will find Toto.

And they’re a live band still making new music, not just part of the nostalgia kick. They play more songs from their brilliant new album Toto XIV than from any other album in their history and whilst yes they do play Africa and Rosanna, they play far more obscure stuff too (which I prefer).

Anyway, I’m making no apologies for loving Toto. I like Gaz Coombes, Tame Impala, First Aid Kit and the Ducktails too, mind, but there’s nothing wrong with a dip in the past and tonight I shall be dipping into mine.

Back soon! Until then, hold the line!
