The Friday Shuffle

by Rick Johansen

Move along, nothing to see here, apart from 10 tunes appearing at random on my iPod this Friday morning.

1. Do Nothing by The Specials. Written by Lynval Golding, from the More Specials album.

2. Awaiting On You All by George Harrison. From the magnificent All Things Must Pass album, so adored by my late dad and me. It is not hard to detect the Phil Spector production here.

3. A Message To Martha by Adam Faith. This is on an old sixties compilation I have. Always loved Adam.

4. Mancunian Way by Take That. A little known but quite excellent song from Beautiful World, still Take That’s best album. Howard sings here, very well, actually.

5. Streets Of Fire by Bruce Springsteen. From the Darkness album. Fantastic.

6. A Love Like This by Dan Fogelberg. “Of all the souls I’ve ever known mine sings to yours and yours alone and yours sings just to me. In all this world I’ll never find a heart that could beat as close to mine and this time I can see.”

7. ’64 AKA Go by Lemon Jelly. Just one of the best examples of electronica.

8. Tears In The Morning by the Beach Boys. From the best Beach Boys best band album, Sunflower, this is a Bruce Johnston song. The best Beach Boys album was obviously Pet Sounds but that was really a Brian Wilson album on which the other members participated.

9. We’ll Never Have To Say Goodnight Again by England Dan and John Ford Coley.

10. Twilley Don’t Mind by Dwight Twilley. The disgracefully underrated Dwight Twilley, still making great music.
