The Friday Music Shuffle (9.2.24)

by Rick Johansen

Greetings music fans and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. That magical time when my music machine selects ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. Yes, it really is that simple. And, probably, dull.

Anyway, I hope you find something you like. You can listen and even sing along by clicking on the title.

Let’s rock.

  1. What Is It Now? by Badly Drawn Boy. The brilliant Damon Gough with a joint from 2002’s Have You Fed The Fish?
  2. 19th Nervous Breakdown by The Rolling Stones. Back to 1966 for this Stones banger.
  3. What Would You Rather Do by The September Sessions Band. Part of the soundtrack from Jack Johnson’s September Sessions’ movie soundtrack. Nice.
  4. Daybreak Over The Ocean by The Beach Boys. Anyone who thought making That’s Why God Made The Radio in 2012 was a good way to celebrate the band’s 50th birthday will have had second thoughts after listening to this. Soon to be deleted from my collection.
  5. Pick A Part That’s New by The Stereophonics. Back to 1999 and a top track from Performance and Cocktails. Kelly Jones has one of the great rock voices.
  6. China Doll by Bruce Hornsby. Somewhat belatedly, I’ve discovered the brilliance of Hornsby. This is from 1993’s Harbor Lights. Pat Metheny and Phil Collins appear on this track.
  7. When Will We Land? by Barry Can’t Swim. Title track from the great man’s 2023 album. Fan-fucking-tastic.
  8. The Start by The Bees. Can’t wait to see the Isle of Wight’s top boys at the Trinity soon. From 2004’s Free The Bees.
  9. Shit Shots Count by Drive By Truckers. Great joint from 2014’s English Oceans. Proper.
  10. Dark Ballet by Madonna. From 2019’s Madame X and it’s wonderful. Even with the Cadbury Fruit and Nut Case stuff.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is the wonderful number nine tune, Shit Shots Count by Drive By Truckers.

I enjoyed that and I hope you did, too.

Have a good week ’til next week.
