The Friday Music Shuffle (5.4.24)

by Rick Johansen

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. Yes, it’s time for the Friday Music Shuffle.

Here, my music device selects ten random tunes from my … er … eclectic collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. The real ‘fun’ begins when you click on the song title to listen and hopefully sing along. I hope you find something you like.

Without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. I Was Beautiful When I Was Alive by Teenage Fanclub. Truly gorgeous from the Scots lads’ 2016 album Here. Have they ever made a bad record? No.
  2. I Went To The Store One Day by Father John Misty. The lush tones of Josh Tillman AKA Father John Misty on this joint from 2015’s I Love You, Honeybear.
  3. Down The Road by Little Feat. Back a mere 50 years for this track from the eternally brilliant Feats Don’t Fail Me Now LP.  Not only do we have Lowell George on lead, we have Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt on back-up vocals.
  4. We Never Lived Here by Beirut. Just a brilliant track from 2019’s Gallipoli.
  5. Down by Hot Chip. Some band, this, who are getting better and better. 2022’s Freakout/Release LP is a proper banger.
  6. Plans Are Like A Dream U Organise by The Go! Team. Fantastic stuff from the Brighton band’s 2018 long player Semicircle.
  7. Thin Thing by The Smile. More than a hint of Radiohead from Thom Yorke’s brilliant pop-up supergroup, this from 2022’s Live At Montreux Jazz Festival.
  8. Eyes To Pearls by Pink Floyd. Short but sweet instrumental from the band’s The Endless River album.
  9. Shot At Me by David Crosby. Late career genius from Croz, this from 2021’s For Free, which was his final studio album. Even at 80 he still had it.
  10. The Messenger by A New Funky Generation. I know nothing about the artist but it’s a track from one of my Best of Café Del Mar compilations, circa 1999. So smooth.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is a tough call. In the end, I decided to go for the exciting number ten tune The Messenger by A New Funky Generation, not least because it reminds me of sunny days on the white island.

Hope you enjoyed today’s show.

Have a good week ’til next week.
