The Friday Music Shuffle (4.4.25)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop-pickers and welcome to this week’s Music Shuffle, in which my music device chooses ten random songs from my collection and I tell you, my loyal reader, what it’s chosen.

I hope you will play along by clicking on the song titles, which will link you to the song via YouTube.

Maybe there will be something you like?

Here goes!

  1. Soon After Midnight by Bob Dylan. We start with a joint from Bob’s 2012 long player Tempest. Excellent.
  2. I’m In Great Shape by The Beach Boys. More than slightly bonkers and very short, but actually very lovely from the legendary Smile album.
  3. Call My Phone Thinking I’m Doing Nothing Better by The Streets, Tame Impala. Back to 2020, who thought Mike Skinner and Kevin Parker could collaborate and produce something as great as this? Well, me!
  4. Insomniac by Echobelly. Really like this track, from 1994’s Everyone’s Got One.
  5. Can I Believe You? (Solstice Version) by Fleet Foxes. Christ, this is beautiful. From 2021’s fantastic live album, A Very Lonely Solstice.
  6. Love Is A Laserquest by Arctic Monkeys. Brilliant, from 2011’s Suck It And See.
  7. Sandstorm by Darude. Some top end Trance from 2010. Love this.
  8. Hairy Trees by Goldfrapp. Back to 2003 and once again our Alison delivers something utterly gorgeous. Find me that sun bed.
  9. Saturday’s Child by The Monkees. Written by Bread man David Gates, this banger is from my main 1966 Christmas present, the Monkees debut album called The Monkees.
  10. Change In Mind, Change Of Heart by Carole King. 1974’s Wrap Around Joy is a great record and if you like Carole, you really should own it. Fun fact: all songs on the album were co-written by David Palmer, once of Steely Dan.

It’s a close run thing for this week’s Desert Island Disc but in the end I’m going for Can I Believe You? (Solstice Version) by Fleet Foxes.

I enjoyed that a lot. Hope you did.

Have a good week till next week.
