The Friday Music Shuffle (4.10.24)

by Rick Johansen

“In the bleak midwinter”, wrote Christina Rossetti, “frosty wind made moan.” That will be me soon, moaning about the impending bleak midwinter. As it is, we’re in the second month of autumn and the sun shines brightly and it’s time for my Friday Music Shuffle.

Here, my music device chooses ten random tracks from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen, along with some gushing guff about how much I love the song. You can sing along if you like by simply clicking on the title. Oh what fun. I hope you find something you like.

  1. Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution by AC/DC. Incredibly, we travel back to 1980 for this joint from Back in Black, the first post Bon Scott AC/DC album, featuring ex Geordie front man Brian Johnson. Classic.
  2. Right Now by Stephen Stills. Back to 1972 we go for this excellent track from Manassas.
  3. Click Click by The Beat. And now back to 1980. This from The Beat’s first long player I Just Can’t Stop It.
  4. Seven Wonders by Fleetwood Mac. Still in retro mood, this absolute belter is from 1987’s Tango In The Night. Stevie Nicks never sounded better.
  5. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service by John Barry. Furthest back so far, 1969 in this case, for John Barry’s excellent Bond theme.
  6. Goin’ Back by The Byrds. Gorgeous Carole King and Gerry Goffin song from the band’s 1968 album The Notorious Byrd  Brothers. Love this.
  7. The Pillar Of Souls by Sufjan Stevens and Angelo Augustine. As you’d expect, it’s absolutely lovely and, for once today, almost modern, from 2021’s A Beginner’s Mind.
  8. Waterfall by Beach Fossils. Simply gorgeous, from 2023’s brilliant Bunny album. All harmony and jingle-jangle guitars.
  9. Keltek by Gwenno. Quite brilliant from Gwenno’s 2022 album Tresor, which is sung almost entirely in Cornish (although clearly not on this track which is an instrumental). Buy this album.
  10. Unapologetic Bitch by Madonna. And finally, a fine track from Madge’s 2015 LP Rebel Heart.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is, by the usual short head, Seven Wonders by Fleetwood Mac.

What a bonkers shuffle. Have a good week till next week.
