The Friday Music Shuffle (3.5.24)

by Rick Johansen

Morning all, and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle.

This is the fun-packed part of the week where my music device chooses ten random tunes from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. If you want to listen and even sing along, be my guest. Just click on the title.

I hope you find something you like!

  1. Apercu by Kansas. And now we go back 50 years for some lush prog from the band’s eponymous debut LP. Just the nine minutes plus …
  2. Pure by The Lightning Seeds. Lovely chune from 1989’s CloudCuckooland.
  3. Held by Bill Callahan. I had literally no idea I had this. Reckon it’s from some Mojo magazine freebie. Nice though.
  4. Teenage Love Affair by Rick Derringer. Banger from Derringer’s brilliant 1973 album All American Boy. Like great guitar-based music with great songs? Buy this album.
  5. 9 Carrots by Flying Lotus. I think this is terrific. From 2019’s Flamagra.
  6. 4 Chords of the Apocalypse by Julian Casablancas. 2009’s Phrazes for the Young was the Strokes man’s debut solo record and what a record it was.
  7. Take A Giant Step by The Monkees. A truly great Gerry Goffin/Carole King song from the band’s 1966 eponymous debut album.
  8. Ketchum, ID by boygenius. From their 208 debut EP, eponymously named as usual today, this is truly lovely. Try boygenius. You won’t regret it.
  9. Strawberry Woman by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. 2023’s Weathervanes is a great album. Can’t wait to see the band in Bristol later this year.
  10. Wish You Were Here by Wyclef Jean. This is a great cover of a great Pink Floyd song.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is – just (sorry Messrs Derringer and Isbell) – Take A Giant Step by The Monkees.

Have a good week til next week.
