The Friday Music Shuffle (28.7.23)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. Here, my music device selects ten songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. To listen, and even sing, along just click on the song title. I hope you find something you like!

Hey ho! Let’s go!

  1. Welfare Symphony by Carole King. Back to 1973 for a lovely song from the Fantasy long player.
  2. Overblow Your Nest by Polyphonic Spree. It’s back to 2007 for a lush joint from The Fragile Army.
  3. Sorrow by Pink Floyd. A track from the Roger Waters free Floyd album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Not a great album, but this is one of the better songs.
  4. Love The One You’re With by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. And it’s back to 1971, the best year for music, with this belter from the 4 Way Street live album. Good sentiment, mind.
  5. Bonfire by Matt Berry. I absolutely love Matt Berry’s quirky music. This is from 2013’s Kill The Wolf.
  6. Hold Back Time by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. From 1995’s oddball Orange Crate Art long player. Not a Wilson classic, but okay.
  7. Climb Every Wall by LUMP. Brilliant track from LUMP’s 2021 album Animal. Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay so brilliant together.
  8. Light by Michael Kiwanuka. All the way from Muswell Hill, I’m so pleased the wonderful Mr Kiwanuka has finally made it on to the shuffle, with this great track from 2019’s Kiwanuka.
  9. Return Of The Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons. Simply wonderful from 1974’s Grievous Angel and featuring Emmylou Harris on backing vocals and Eagle Bernie Leadon on guitar.
  10. Losing My Touch by The Rolling Stones. Not sure you’d know was the Stones unless I told you this was Keith Richards on lead vocals. Nice enough.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is a very easy choice – the exciting number nine tune, Return Of The Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons.  If you don’t have a copy of Grievous Angel, are you alive?

Have a good week ’til next week. (If you are wondering whose catchphrase this was, it was Kent Walton’s. Ask your parents, kids.)
