With the nights beginning to close in, it can only be a matter of time until it’s midwinter again. In breezy South Gloucestershire, it feels like it already is. Yet, according to folk who prefer to use the Astronomical calendar, we’re only a week into summer. Go figure. Anyway, let’s remember why we’re here today.
It’s the Friday Music Shuffle, that’s all. It’s where my music device chooses ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. If that doesn’t sound like fun – and actually, it doesn’t sound like much fun – you can make it better by clicking on the song titles and listening to the actual songs.
Without further ado, let’s rock. I hope you find something you like.
- I Wish by Skee-Lo. Back to 1995 for this absolute classic.
- Let It Grow by Eric Clapton. I’m a little embarrassed these days when something from old Slowhand appears, given what a conspiracy theorist nut job he has turned into, but still, from 1974’s 461 Ocean Boulevard, this is rather lovely.
- Find A Way by Say She She. What a brilliant joint from 2023’s Silver. They’re a great band.
- What’s The New Mary Jane by The Beatles (Esher demo). This never made it onto the 1968 ‘White’ album. Not hard to understand why.
- My Love Is A Gentle Thing by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Another out take, this time a song CSN recorded in 1975 but it never made it to an album until they released a box set many years later.
- What Is Life by Black Uhuru. I bought the 12″ single when it was first released in 1984. Incredible song. And that’s Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar on bass and drums, respectively.
- Clown’s Tambourine by Bruce Hornsby. 1998 now and a ‘bonus’ track from the re-released Spirit Trail album. Superb.
- Can’t Stay Away From You by Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine. Nice chune from our Glor’s 1987 LP Let It Loose.
- Rome by Phoenix. The English-speaking French indie band with a banger from 2009’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix LP.
- Steady State by Teenage Fanclub. This is from 2016’s Here. Lovely.
As soon as it started, I just knew that this week’s Desert Island Disc was going to be the exciting number one song I Wish By Skee-Lo.
Hope you enjoyed that. I did.
Have a good week till next week.
