The Friday Music Shuffle (28.3.25)

British Summer Time Special

by Rick Johansen

Greetings friends, and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle, that fun-packed time of the week where I set my music device free to select ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen.

I do hope you’ll click on the title of each song and listen to the music, especially if the song is one with which you are not familiar.

And I hope you enjoy it.

  1. Spanish Moon by Little Feat. What a banger to start with, from 1974’s Feats Don’t Fail Me Now.
  2. Dirty Frank by Pearl Jam. We’re up to 1991 with a joint from Pearl Jam’s first album Ten. Nice.
  3. The Silent Wail by Terry Hall and Mushtaq. The album, 2003’s The Hour Of Two Lights, is by some distance my favourite Terry Hall music ever. The Specials it ain’t.
  4. Keep It Real by Coko Feat Jay-Z. Apparently, this is the from the soundtrack of a movie called Hav Plenty (sic) which was released in 1998. I think it’s great.
  5. Secular Praise by Timothy B. Schmit. Very nice from the long serving Eagle and Poco man, from his excellent 2008 long player Expando. This song features the Blind Boys of Alabama on backing vocals and Jim Keltner on drums.
  6. In The Mirror by Thee Sacred Souls. Some brilliant and sweet soul music from their stellar 2024 album Got A Story To Tell.
  7. Almost Gone by Crosby, Stills and Nash. This song, written by Nash and Crosby’s son James Raymond, can only be found on the CSN live album from 2012. This is it and it’s excellent latter day CSN.
  8. Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. And now we head back to 1979 and this classic from The Wall.
  9. Resting Place by Bruce Hornsby. Anyone who thinks Hornsby is nothing more than The Way It Is needs to get their shit together. This lengthy banger comes from 1998’s great album Spirit Trail.
  10. I Want Your Soul by Armand Van Helden. And finally, back we go to 2007 for this excellent chunk of dance music, which features a sample of the wonderful Siedah Garrett.

Hmm. This week’s Desert Island Disc. By a short head I am going for Spanish Moon by Little Feat.

Have a good week till next week.
