The Friday Music Shuffle (27th June 2025)

Last shuffle of June special

by Rick Johansen

Nearly one third of the way into the British meteorological summer and the sun shines brightly. So, what better to do than enjoy/endure my weekly music shuffle?

Yes,  here my music machine chooses ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. Please click on the song title to listen along with me because you never know you might find something you like.

Here goes:

  1. Go As You Please by Stealers Wheel. Back we go 50 years for a track from the excellent Right Or Wrong album by Gerry Rafferty’s chaps. Nice.
  2. Somebody Help Me by The Spencer Davis Group. Even further back, this time to 1966, for this banger featuring little old Steve Winwood.
  3. Time Is On My Side by The Marmalade. Still in the dim and distant past, this time to 1968. This was the B side to Baby Make It Soon.
  4. Motown Junk by Manic Street Preachers. Back to 1991 for the Manic’s second single which bombed at the time. God knows why. It’s great.
  5. Inayaat by Arooj Aftab. Sensationally beautiful from her 2021 LP Vulture Prince.
  6. Don’t Listen To The Rumors by Graham Nash. The great man made very little terrible music, but his 1986 album Innocent Eyes is full of terrible music. Might have to bin this one.
  7. Paper by Saint Etienne. Lovely song from later reissues of their excellent long player So Tough, first released in 1993.
  8. Dust by North Atlantic Oscillation. Some wonderful electronica prog from this brilliant Scottish band. This from 2014’s The Third Day.
  9. Summer Of Love by John Fogerty. An okay track from Fogerty’s okay album Revival. Just a bit of Hendrix influence on this one.
  10. Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie. All 18 minutes of it, here, basically side one of Guthrie’s 1967 album Alice’s Restaurant. Simply great.

Arooj Aftab had this week’s Desert Island Disc in the bag right up until song number ten came into view. Alice’s Restaurant Massacree by Arlo Guthrie is that song.

Have a good week till next week!
