The Friday Music Shuffle (26.6.26)

Nights closing in for winter special

by Rick Johansen

Greetings, pop-pickers, and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle.

It’s that fun-packed time of the week where my music machine selects ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. Click on the title to listen.

With the nights closing in before winter blows in, let’s enjoy these last few days of summer with some lush music.

I hope you find something you like.

  1. Had To Hear by Real Estate. Some lovely jingle-jangle guitar music from a great and underrated band, from their 2014 LP Atlas.
  2. Solan Goose by Erland Cooper. Man, this is great from the Orkney Island genius, from his 2018 album of the same name.
  3. Searching by King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. What an interesting Aussie band they are. This from 2017’s Polygondwanaland.
  4. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. From Lightfoot’s stellar 1976 album Summertime Dream, this is simply magnificent.
  5. Birthday by Sammy Hagar. That rarity, a Lennon and McCartney song that remained unrecorded until Macca put it out on his live Tripping The Live Fantastic LP of 1990. This version is from the compilation The Art of McCartney which features a range of artists covering Macca songs. And it’s very good.
  6. The American Adventure by the Electric Soft Parade. Cursed from the moment I predicted big things for this excellent Brighton band. This, the title track from their 2003 LP.
  7. Piece Of Me by TEED. TEED stands for Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and this beauty is from his (TEED’s a he) 2025 album Always With Me, which you so need.
  8. Congratulations by MGMT. No, not the Cliff Richard ‘classic’. This from the band’s 2010 album of the same name.
  9. Dublin City Sky by Fontaines D.C. What a great joint by the Dublin band, from 2019’s outstanding album Dogrel.
  10. Dancing by Lindsey Buckingham. From his eponymous 2021 album, the lad has still got it.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot. I reckon that was a pretty decent shuffle.

Have a good week till next week.

Cheers, all.
