The Friday Music Shuffle (24.3.23)

by Rick Johansen

Greetings pop pickers and welcome to the all new Friday Music Shuffle. In a big break with tradition, for this week only, my music device will select 10 random songs from my collection and I’ll tell you what it’s chosen. So, no change at all, then. Anyway, if you want to listen to the song and even sing along, then just click on the song title.

So let’s get ready to rumble!

  1. Charity by Courtney Barnett. The truly wonderful Ms Barnett kicks us off this week with this great song from 2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel. Awesome start.
  2. Hazey Jane I by Nick Drake. We journey back to 1970 for this track from the much missed Nick Drake and his achingly brilliant Bryter Later LP.
  3. Doctor Pressure by Mylo Vs Miami Sound Machine. An incredible mash-up of Drop The Pressure and Dr Beat.
  4. Sunday by Nick Drake. This happens sometimes – another track from Nick’s Bryter Later, this time the instrumental closing track.
  5. Square One by Beck. An absolute belter from 2017’s excellent Colors album.
  6. Do It All Over Again by Spiritualized. Of all the great songs they’ve made none is better than this. A slight hint of Beach Boys in this one.
  7. God’s Favourite Customer by Father John Misty. The brilliant Father John Misty AKA Josh Tillman with the title track of 2018’s God’s Favourite Customer. Such a lovely voice.
  8. You’re No Good by Linda Ronstadt. One of the great voices in popular music. What a great song and performance.
  9. Something Like A Mama by Underworld. Classic Underworld from 1999’s Beaucoup Fish LP.
  10. It’s My Life by Dr. Alban. It’s not often you get a song by a Nigerian/Swedish artist but here, from 1992, we have one. Fun fact: the song was used for a Tampax advert. Great song.

A great week if you ask me. My Desert Island Disc is, by way of a split decision, Charity by Courtney Barnett. Sorry Ms Ronstadt. Possibly on another day…

That’s all, folks!
