The Friday Music Shuffle (30.8.24)

Last shuffle of the summer of '24

by Rick Johansen

Good day everyone and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. It’s will be the last one of the alleged summer of 2024 given that the meteorological autumn begins on Sunday, so enjoy what’s left of it.

As per usual, my music device selects ten songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. Then, you merely have to click on the song title to listen, and maybe even sing, along.

I hope you find something you like.

  1. Down The Line by Beach Fossils. One of my more recent finds, this is from their lush album Somersault, released in 2017. Nice jingle-jangle guitars and harmonies.
  2. I’m Thinking Of You by Dexys. A rare interloper from she who must be obeyed’s collection, this from 2012’s One Day I’m Going To Soar. Not really my cuppa tea, TBH.
  3. On A Monday by Ry Cooder. The great man’s 1972 album Into The Purple Valley is one of my favourite records. Man’s a genius.
  4. Born At The Right Time by Paul Simon. Gorgeous tune from 1990’s The Rhythm of the Saints.
  5. Plenty Of Girls In The Sea by MGMT. Blimey – 2013 for this belter from the band’s eponymously titled LP. So underrated.
  6. California Man by The Move. Classic Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne from 1972.
  7. Twenty-One by The Eagles.  What The Eagles were back in 1973 from the Desperado long player. Marvellous.
  8. Bad Day by R.E.M. Simply magnificent from the greatest American rock band of all time. Possibly.
  9. Still Hungry by DJ Format. Feat Abdominal. Title track from their excellent 2017 LP.
  10. My Mind’s Eye by The Small Faces. Good grief – back we go to 1966 for this lovely tune, which the great Steve Marriott accepted he’d stolen from the Christmas song Gloria In Excelsis Deo. Who cares?

This week’s Desert Island Disc is Bad Day by R.E.M.

Hope you enjoyed that. Have a good week till next week.
