The Friday Music Shuffle (18.8.23)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. It’s that exciting (?) time of the week where I set my music device free and let it choose ten random tracks from my music collection. What happens next is I tell you what it’s chosen and give you the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to listen and even sing along.

I hope you like it.

  1. Feelin’ Alright by Grand Funk Railroad. A half-decent cover of the Traffic song, taken from the band’s 1971 long player Survival.
  2. Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Nine minutes of sheer greatness from the band’s debut album Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd. 1973, mind.
  3. Tiny Letters by Warmduscher. Apparently, the band is described as ‘post punk’. I have no idea what this means but they are terrific and this track comes from 2019’s Tainted Lunch album.
  4. Bargain Of The Century by Albert Hammond Jr. Great track from the Strokes’ man’s solo record from 2008, ¿Como Te Llama?
  5. Bitter Wind by Moby Grape. One of my favourite bands ever, from 1968’s Wow.
  6. Ramblin’ Man by Lemon Jelly. Brilliant Electronica from 2002’s epic Horizons.
  7. I.G.Y by Donald Fagen. Opening joint from the Steely Dan man’s first solo album, the indispensable The Nightfly, where he sings about the future. Buy this album.
  8. Ashes by Poco. Nice little country tune from Poco’s 1982 album Cowboys and Englishmen.
  9. World by The Bee Gees. Back to 1967 for this wee gem from the brothers Gibb.
  10. Danger by J.J. Cale and Eric Clapton. Excellent from their 2006 LP The Road To Escondido.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is the exciting number seven tune I.G.Y by Donald Fagen.

Have a good week ’til next week.
