The Friday Music Shuffle (17.3.23)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop-pickers and welcome to this week’s music shuffle, the one where I let my music device choose 10 random tunes from my collection and I tell you what they are. And if you want to join in with the great excitement, then just click on the title where you can listen and, hopefully, sing along.

So, let’s rock!

  1. Alfred Hitchcock Television Theme by Alfred Hitchcock and Jeff Alexander. Back to 1958 for the most bizarre shuffle starter ever!
  2. The Living Daylights by a-Ha. One of my favourite James Bond theme songs, taking us back to 1987.
  3. The Last Time I Saw Her by Gordon Lightfoot. 1968 and Gord’s early days as a folkie. Always been a fan.
  4. WhisperI’lllistentohearit by Spoon. I’m a big fan of Spoon, too, and I hope this excellent joint from 2017’s Hot Thoughts long player will help explain why.
  5. Outbound Train by Ryan Adams. From 2017’s excellent Prisoner album, this is excellent.
  6. Underground by Kongos. The sons of 1970s’ hero John with a track from their 2016 album Egomaniac.
  7. Step On You by Joe Vitale. From one of my favourite records by anyone ever, my friend Joe’s 1975 album Roller Coaster Weekend. Buy this record.
  8. Snake Man (live) by The Doobie Brothers. Absolute belter from their fantastic 2018 live album Live at the Beacon. Still on top form
  9. Western Stars by Bruce Springsteen. Not sure I can forgive The Boss for introducing rip off ‘dynamic pricing’ for his live shows – a reputation well and truly trashed in my view – but this from 2019 is magnificent.
  10. On The Way Home by Buffalo Springfield. And finally we go back to 1968 for this Neil Young song actually sung by Richie Furay. Nice, very nice.

This week’s exciting Desert Island Disc, in a tough field, is the exciting number seven tune Step On You by Joe Vitale.

That’s all, folks!
