The Friday 8/1 Jukebox

by Rick Johansen

Following the Christmas break, it’s time to get self-indulgent again and here is the Friday iPod shuffle!

1. Child is The father of the Man by Brian Wilson. From Brian’s solo version of the epic Smile album, backed by the most immense band in the world, part of which is the Wondermints.

2. Climbing Up The Walls by Radiohead. From the excellent OK Computer.

3. Garden of Flowers by the Producers. How can a band including Trevor Horn, Lol Creme and Ash Soan make a bad record? Answer: they can’t and Made in Basing Street is quite a wonderful one. A smattering of Buggles in here too.

4. Mr Tembo by Damon Albarn. From the excellent Everyday Robots records.

5. Fantasy Beginning by Carole King. Beautiful. Love the Fantasy album.

6. Sweet Baby James by James Taylor. From the album of the same name.

7. Bittersweet Bundle of Misery by Graham Coxon. This is basically Coffee and TV from the Happiness in Magazines album.

8. Carefree Highway by Gordon Lightfoot. Canadian classic.

9. Saturday’s Child by the Monkees. From their first – and quite wonderful – Meet the Monkees album. Still know all the words.

10. How does that grab you, darlin’ by Nancy Sinatra. Recorded in the same session, I suspect, as These Boots are made for walking because it’s much the same song.

You explained it at some of your gigs, although I can’t exactly recall. It’s a great tune and may come up on the shuffle sometime. Your songs were the soundtrack of my life for many years and sometimes, on the iPod, they still are.
