That Good Friday Music Shuffle (19/4/19)

by Rick Johansen

My loyal reader will no doubt be thrilled to learn this will be the first of two music shuffles today. One from my…ahem…stellar collection of top music and one from my far better half, the lovely Cath. Being that this is my blog and I am a terrible misogynist (not really, honest guv), I’m going first.

I’m here in my Man Cave on a sunny, warm bank holiday morning and I’m about to set my music collection to shuffle. Let’s see what gems emerge today.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.

  1. The Selfish Giant by Damon Albarn. The truly great Mr Albarn from his wondrous solo record Everyday Robots.
  2. Let Me Song and I’m Happy by Al Jolson. From 1930 (!), the great Al Jolson sings an Irving Berlin classic.
  3. Plantation Harbour by Joe Vitale. Title track of this quite magnificent album by one of my very favourite players, singers and people on this earth and someone I am proud to call a friend.
  4. The Girls I Knew Somewhere by the Monkees. The B side of A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, this little beauty was written by Michael Nesmith, Sung by Micky Dolenz and the band actually play all the instruments except bass guitar.
  5. Birth of an Accidental Hipster by the Monkees. From their 2016 Good Times! album, this one was written by – and I am not making this up – Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. It’s mint, innit?
  6. Sweet Sweetheart by Carole King. Well, it’s lovely, isn’t it?
  7. On Your Own by Blur. Fucking brilliant from one of the best bands ever.
  8. Torture Me by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Unmistakably the Chili boys from Stadium Arcadium.
  9. Listen To Her Heart by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. My favourite Petty tune and my favourite 12″ single of all time. Still have to play it on full volume. Probably the best ending in rock music ever.
  10. You Can All Join In by Traffic. Quirky little gem by a very youthful Steve Winwood and co from 1968.

That’s all, folks!
