That Friday Shuffle 15/1

by Rick Johansen

Let’s see what the iPod can come up with this morning:

1. Devil Pray by Madonna. Confessions not from the dance floor? Love Madonna and the Rebel Heart is triffic.

2. Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen. Close my eyes and I can see Tom Hanks’s career high, playing Andrew Beckett.

3. A Night on The Town by Bruce Hornsby and the Range. I remember buying a cassette tape of the album of the same name at the Millennium Dome when we visited some 16 years ago. Bruce SO underrated.

4. Carnival 2000 by Prefab Sprout. Never forget the brilliance of Paddy McAloon. Such class.

5. O Girlfriend by Weezer. Very near the top of my must-see-but-probably-never-will bands, this from the seminal Green album.

6. Continuing by Mike Nesmith. Yes, old wool hat from the Monkees, from his beautiful record And the hits just keep on comin’. Some lovely pedal steel on here.

7. Closed Groove by Stiff Little fingers. ‘Punctuality, a waste of time’ growls Jake Burns in this cut from the classic Inflammable Material record.

8. This Side of Midnight by Albert Hammond Jr. Something new, from 2015’s Revolution of the Heart, one of my very favourite records of the year.

9. Fairweather Friends by Queens of the Stone Age. Josh and pals from the Like Clockwork long player.

10. My My My by Rob Thomas. I think Matchbox Twenty’s Thomas is one of the best singers on the planet and this beautifully sung ditty comes from the Something To Be record.
