After the sheer misery of last night’s dire referendum result, it’s time for the Friday iPod shuffle to try and lift my spirits.
I wonder if any of these random tunes will have any spiritual connection to the EU ballot?
1. Cry Baby by Utopia. Utopia is, of course, Todd Rundgren and Todd is God. The man has an amazing ear for a tune.
2. This life holds something for me by Grin. Grin is, of course, Nils Lofgren which sounds like Rundgren. Lovely.
3. Spotlight by Madonna. From the You Can Dance long player, before Madge had proper signing lessons. Not unlike Holiday, this one.
4. Faron Young by Prefab Sprout. Wonderful.
5. All Screwed Up by AC/DC. As ever, most AC/DC albums are mostly filler with little by way of killers. Here’s another filler.
6. One by the Bee Gees. Not one of their best known tunes but right up there with my very favourites. The gorgeous harmonies wash all over you. This makes me feel a lot better. Well, just a bit.
7. Angel Eyes by Roxy Music. This one’s from their classic ‘Best of Roxy Music’ LP.
8. Eton Rifles by the Jam. “We came out of it naturally the worst, beaten and bloody and I was sick down my shirt. We were no match for their untamed wit, though some of the lads said they’d be back next week.” Have that, Dave.
9. Bad on Fords and Chevrolets by Sammy Hagar. Slightly country-ish here. What a voice.
10. Sing by the Carpenters. I really do think Karen Carpenter had one of the greatest voices in the history of music.
