That Friday Music Shuffle 17/6

by Rick Johansen

As Brian Wilson might have put it, I’m going to add some music to your day.

Every Friday, I let my iPod play random tunes and for reasons best known to myself I share them with you on this website. So here is my Friday Music Shuffle.

1. Bad Boy Boogie by AC/DC. Proper AC/DC to start with. No Axl Rose, not even Brian Johnson. It’s the raw throat of Bon Scott. If you want blood, you’ve got it!

2. A Horse With No Name by America. Somewhere in the loft is the vinyl single I bought in…gulp! – 1971. Having looked it up, I now remember that the B side had two songs, Everyone I meet is from California, which I barely remember, and Sandman, which I adore.

3. The Sensual Woman by the Herbaliser. No, nor me. It’s on one of my compilation albums, those Chilled ones. And it’s pretty chilled.

4. Flowers in the Rain by the Move. The first song ever played on Radio One, back in 1967. Classic Roy Wood tune with both Wood and lead singer Carl Wayne singing without the benefit of fake American accents, as so many British singers do.

5. Only When I Sleep by the Corrs. I always fancied the one with the brown hair. I think it was Jim.

6. Cornerstone by the Arctic Monkeys. Bah, Humbug. No, actually: brilliant Humbug.

7. New World Towers by Blur. From their magnificent comeback record The Magic Whip, utterly infectious, wonderful.

8. Darling by the Beach Boys. Great live performance from a rainy Knebworth in 1980. A bit too fast but carl Wilson nails it, as ever.

9. Blue Lines by Massive Attack. “Yeah while I’m doing this I know the place I really wanna go. The one I love but never gets near me.” How effing good is this?

10. Spoilin’ for a Fight by AC/DC. A filler from the latter-day AC/DC album Black Ice. Not great.
