Give peace a chance

by Rick Johansen

It would be silly to say that I am proud of my Norwegian ancestry since I played no role in bringing it about. I’m only here thanks to the accident of my birth, defying odds of one in four hundred billion to be born at all. That said, I can’t help feeling a bit smug about said ancestry when I hear Donald Trump going off on one about the country’s failure to award him the Nobel Peace Price. If I’m not proud of my family history, I’m glad it’s part of me.

You see, Dementia Donny explained to an audience of his adoring fans that he had already settled eight wars and was “about to settle or win two more“, despite there being little or no evidence that he has settled any wars at all. But nonetheless, his audience lapped it all up, booing loudly as Trump said his failure to be awarded the prize was “an indelible stain on the country of Norway. We will not forget”. There is, I am sure you know, a problem with this. Norway, the country, does not actually award the Nobel prize. It’s awarded by an independent committee. But in his eyes, the award, which was given to former International Criminal Court judge Navi Pillay was both “disgraceful and embarrassing“.

You would have thought his war on Iran, not to mention his treacherous support for Russia in its war against Ukraine and support for Israel’s ethnic cleansing/genocide in Gaza, would see him nominated not for a prestigious peace award but a reference to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

According to the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Navi Pillay had been “instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted“. That seems reasonable enough to me. But it was not good enough for the madman in the White House who said: “The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilisation.” Okay, then Donny. Don’t call us, we’ll call you.

I often find myself wondering how on Earth the great citizens of the USA USA USA came to elect him, not just once but twice (three times if you believe Trump’s lies about having the 2020 election stolen from him), but then I remember that we in the UK were persuaded by one of his lickspittles and fan boys Nigel Farage to commit a massive act of self-harm by voting for Brexit. And in 2019, chief liar and bullshitter Boris Johnson became prime minister. If we are somehow claiming intellectual and moral superiority over our cousins across the pond then we’d best think again.

Many people cannot wait until 2028 when Trump leaves the White House for the last time. Being even more blunt, many people cannot wait until he dies, such is the level of hatred and fear he brings out in people. The hatred he himself carries around has, due to his own actions, become mirrored by many of his critics. If he quietly shuffled off his mortal coil, surely the world might improve?

While the people of Norway have had no say in the attribution of the Nobel Peace Price, it gives me quiet satisfaction to know that by not getting it the Nobel Price committee have seriously pissed off this demented narcissist, so I am going to claim part of the satisfaction that it has happened.

In all seriousness, Donald Trump is a very bad bloke and only last night he has agreed to help fund the Russian war effort against Ukraine by handing Putin vast sums of money for much-needed diesel to calm the shortages in the USA. If Winston Churchill had done something similar in World War Two, boosting the Nazi war effort as Hitler’s army marched across Europe, he’d have been seen as the traitor and not the hero he rightly became. That is the moral equivalent of what Trump has done. Everything about his two terms as president has been disastrous for the world. It really is time the rest of the world, including the UK, stopped appeasing him.

Still, well done plucky Norway who by having nothing to do with presenting the Nobel Peace Prize have seriously pissed off this, the most awful president since, well, his first term.

Trump told his assembled fans that he had “never heard” of the “mystery person”, Navi Pillay, and neither had I, but having read up a little she seems a worthy recipient of the award. Sadly, we have all heard of Donald Trump and wish we hadn’t. Soon, he will be gone and maybe the world will return to a kind of normal. I am not going to lie: I hope his departure from the White House happens sooner rather than later. I think you know what I’m saying here, but I’m just being honest about how I feel. In the meantime, thanks to the Nobel Peace Price committee for not appeasing this idiot. If you have helped hasten his demise by helping him burst another blood vessel, then all well and good. All we are saying is give peace a chance.
