It’s what you haven’t been waiting for: my Friday morning music shuffle, 10 random tunes from my iPod which are belting out in my man shed!
1. Holy War by Toto. From last year’s surprisingly excellent Toto IV album, featuring some storming drumming by Keith Carlock and the usual blinding guitar work from Steve Lukather.
“Holy war…
Show me what you’ve been concealing
All in the name of peace and love
What are we fighting for?
I thought the point was healing
Clearly I was dead wrong.”
2. Lullaby by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks. The writers of the legendary Beach Boys’ Smile album combine on the eccentric Orange Crate Art record. This is an instrumental orchestral piece. Lovely.
3. Panic by Todd Rundgren. Top notch rock from Todd’s excellent Arena record. Recommended.
4. I Make Love by Jo Jo Gunne. More to Jay Ferguson’s excellent four piece than Run, Run, Run.
5. I’m the one you need by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. Beautiful.
6. Farewell is a lonely sound by Jimmy Ruffin. More gorgeous Motown.
7. Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers. Magnificent, classic cover of Seals and Croft’s 1970s tune, featuring the glorious vocals of Ronald Isley and the exquisite guitar of brother Ernie. Pretty nigh perfect.
8. Train in G major by Lindisfarne. A little known bluesy tune from the boys from the Toon.
9. Una Disco Llenaby by Los Amigos Invisibles. From Venezuela’s finest, another beaut.
10. Take It Easy by the Eagles. Where it began, the first time I ever heard Glen Frey. What a song.
