A Warning From History

by Rick Johansen

Once upon a time, the TV presenter and former footballer Gary Lineker didn’t accuse the government of acting like actual Nazis. That didn’t stop the gutter press telling lies, suggesting that he did. He compared the language used to 1930s Germany, which was entirely fair, reasonable and accurate, but tell a lie often enough, as Boris Johnson did with Brexit, and enough people will belief it to be true. But now the government in general, and home secretary Suella Braverman in particular are literally doing something that strongly resembles Goebbels Nazi propaganda in 1930s. And we’re paying for it.

Braverman has arrived in Rwanda on a taxpayer funded jolly with reporters from a certain section of the media. The hard right section. She’s being accompanied by GB News, the Mail, Express, Times and Telegraph and no one else. No invites were available for the BBC, which is hardly a left wing news outlet these days, Sky, ITV or any other newspaper. Braverman has clearly decided to spend our money on a right wing anti-foreigner junket in order to attract favourable coverage in specific sections of the media.

There will be no questioning of anything she decides to to because she has chosen only those who share her ghastly views to report on her. I find it hard to describe any of the hacks who have accompanied her as actual journalists. They are simply propagandists, reporting what the government wants us to hear. Just like Nazi Germany.

“Oh, how offensive,” some might say. “How can you compare Old Blighty to the Nazis?”  Well, I’m not saying we’re there yet, particularly as our current prime minister, Brand Rishi Sunak, is about as threatening as Paddington Bear. But the policies, well they’re heading in that direction.

We are already facing voter repression as the government introduces laws to make it harder to vote, despite there being no evidence of voter fraud. Our right to protest is under threat. Despite the UK already having the most oppressive anti trade union laws, Sunak wants to make them even more oppressive. And anyone who dares to query any aspect of the government’s activities, people like Lineker and Carol Vorderman are immediately denounced by right wing politicians and their media mouthpieces.

Apparently, the country is under threat from a shady group called the New Elite, who may be an offshoot from the Liberal Elite or in my case the Council House elite. We are snowflakes, part of the wokerati and that old chestnut politically correct. All absolutely nonsense if you just look at the facts.

The entire print media, with the exception of The Guardian and Observer with small minority readerships, is owned and controlled by very rich people and corporations, most of whom have a political agenda nearly always coming from the right and often hard right of the political spectrum. Someone like me, from the Council House Elite, has no access to the national media, which is why I have a blog, published to my millions – all right, dozens – of readers. Our so-called ‘free press’ is anything but free to all but the real elite, the actual establishment who control and indeed own much of the country.

I’m disgusted that Braverman has flown to Rwanda with her right wing media sycophants at our expense for what is a publicity stunt and photo opportunity. And just as disgusted that the Great British Public isn’t up in arms about it. That’s because the narrative is tightly controlled from the centre and in true Goebbels style we are only told what they think we need to be told.

We’ve had plenty of warnings from history and here’s another one. At least we’re not looking the other way, as we were in the late 1930s, so that gives me some hope that we can see off the slowly advancing voices of right wing hate. Calling out Braverman as a right wing fanatic is a start. The next thing will be to vote this lot out. You never know what these people would like to ban next.
