There was much laughter from Gasheads (Bristol Rovers supporters) last night when the evening flight from Bristol to Newcastle, containing large number of Shitheads (Bristol City fans) heading to Sunderland, was cancelled. easyJet had clearly laid on a bigger plane than usual to take the fans to the North East but Storm Otto came along, diverting the inbound flight to Bristol to Gatwick. I knew all this during the afternoon because, sad bastard that I am, I had been tracking flights on the internet and I knew there was trouble ahead. Sadly for the Shitheads enjoying themselves in the bar at Adge Cutler International (Bristol), it came as a bolt out of the blue. One wouldn’t expect ordinary punters to understand what was coming, but if I knew what was likely to happen hours before the cancellation, why couldn’t the powers that be warn everyone else?
Shitheads were understandably furious at the late cancellation. easyJet and Bristol Airport got loads of stick. There was no information other than signs on the TV that the flight had been cancelled. There was no one at the information desk. The Canadian teachers pension scheme that owns the airport was laughing its way to even bigger profits. Everyone is to blame. Of course, it’s more complicated than that.
Bristol Airport used to be owned by Bristol City Council, which meant it was democratically accountable to the people of Bristol. Now, its been flogged off and it’s now owned by a pension scheme that’s accountable to retired Canadian teachers. But there’s more. We love easyJet because it’s cheap. There will be no one at the information desk because that would involve employing more people and raising flight prices. But we don’t want that. Most of the time, there are no serious delays. Why staff an information desk if no one is using it? When things go tits up, like they did last night, what did we expect? We have become used to getting everything on the cheap. Sadly, this is what can happen.
I don’t know why airports and airlines simply be upfront and honest. easyJet and Bristol must have known many hours before the cancellation that this was likely to happen. I reckon they will have known that the Newcastle flight was very unlikely to take place. Christ, I did and I’m not even an expert.
It isn’t great to learn that your brilliant weekend has been ruined, but surely it’s better to know sooner rather than later?
Still, it was funny…
