The Friday Music Shuffle (4.9.20)

by Rick Johansen

Hi all. Welcome to the fourth day of winter, as I always refer to the beginning of autumn. On that unhappy note, why not join me in my Man Cave where my musical device (phone) will play ten songs at random from my collection (of crap, as my partner puts it).

So, here goes. Let’s rock.

  1. Lady Eleanor (live) by Lindisfarne. I happen to think that Lindisfarne were up there with the greatest of all British bands and Alan Hull one of its great songwriters and poets. This is a live version of one of their classics and it’s mint.
  2. Give It 2 U by Robin Thicke feat. Kendrick Lamar. You wonder what Robin wants to give ‘2 U’ but it turns out that it’s his ‘big dick’. Apart from the obvious misogyny, he’s a talented artist. Why be a dick, Thicke?
  3. Dancing Queen (live) by Abba. From their ‘Live at Wembley Arena’ long player, Abba show they can cut the mustard in live performance, not withstanding a great band and a galaxy of backing singers. A truly great song, mind.
  4. Look Up by Zero 7. Some gorgeous electronica from 2004’s When It Falls album.
  5. Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Title track from their excellent 2006 album.
  6. Space Station #5 (live from the Ronnie Montrose tribute concert) by Sammy Hagar and friends. Plenty of live action this week, this time the great Sammy Hagar reprises the Montrose classic, with friends including Joe Satriani.
  7. Barefoot in the Head by A Man Called Adam. Electronica featuring Sally Rodgers who does a more than passable and wholly unintentional impression of Madonna.
  8. Planet ‘D’Ronda by Donald Fagen. Cool as you like from the Steely Dan man’s fourth album Sunken Condos, released in 2012.
  9. See The Changes by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Excellent Stephen Stills tune from 1977s CSN album.
  10. Walk Between The Raindrops by Donald Fagen. The Steely Dan man again, this time from his first solo album The Nightfly. Genius.

That’s all, folks!
