Welcome Back, My Friends, to the Show That Never Ends. Yes, it’s a very special edition of the Friday Music Shuffle today, basically the last shuffle of the summer, before winter, or as some of you call it, autumn, begins next Tuesday.
What happens is this. My music device chooses ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. Could anything be more exciting? The answer is probably yes, anything could be more exciting. But anyway, here we go.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to click on each song title and listen along. Maybe, if you know the song, you could sing along, too.

- Morning Glory by Gordon Lightfoot. A lovely tune from 1981’s East Of Midnight. And he really does sing, ‘What’s the story, Morning Glory?’ long before serial plagiarist Noel Gallagher claimed to have come up with it.
- Heaven’s Room by Ducktails. As my loyal reader knows, I am a sucker for jingle-jangle guitars so this track from 2015’s St Catherine is a surefire winner for me. Love this band.
- Shudder/King Of Snake by Underworld. Simply wonderful from 1999’s King Of Snake. Everyone should have this record, no excuses.
- No More Lonely Nights by Paul McCartney. From 1984’s somewhat patchy but occasionally brilliant Give My Regards To Broad Street album/movie. I honestly think this song is great.
- I’ll Work For Your Love by Bruce Springsteen. 1984 again and by his standards some filler from his album Magic.
- The Sound Of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel. Back much further, this time to 1964, written just after the assassination of JFK, for some sheer perfection.
- Body Music (12″ version) by Chris Rainbow. Sadly no longer with us, Rainbow is probably the greatest singer-songwriter you’ve never heard of. His 1979 album, White Trails, is as good as anything you will hear.
- Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone by The Temptations. Absolute classic Motown from 1972. Fantastic.
- I Will by The Beatles. One minute and 45 seconds of perfection. No other words necessary.
- Deja Vu (All Over Again) by John Fogerty. Latter day music from the Creedence man. This is the title track of his 2004 album and it’s about how the War On Terror reminded the narrator of the disastrous war in Vietnam.
No doubt in my mind that this is the best shuffle ever.
This week’s Desert Island Disc is, of course, I Will by The Beatles. Fun fact: if there had been an eleventh song, it would have been Eton Rifles by The Jam.
