The Friday Music Shuffle (21st November 2025)

by Rick Johansen

Good day everyone and welcome to my Friday Music Shuffle.

Every Friday, my music device selects ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. I listen along ‘live’ and I hope you do, too. And to enable you to share the ‘fun’, all I ask you do is click on each song title in turn and turn your speakers up.

I dedicate this shuffle to Stone Roses bass player Gary “Mani” Mounfield whose death was announced yesterday, 20th November 2025. RIP. Trust me, mate: you were adored.

Let’s listen to the music.

  1. Sun Arise by Rolf Harris. So many stars from my childhood went on to let me down, including Rolf. This one takes me back, though. My views on what happened – or didn’t happen? – have been affected by this excellent book.
  2. Watching Him Fade Away by Mac Demarco. Fine track from 2017’s This Old Dog. Very underrated performer and writer.
  3. I Don’t Care by Teenage Fanclub. Classic TFC from their excellent 1997 LP Songs From Northern Britain.
  4. Future Lover by Thee Sacred Souls. Well, this is excellent soul music from the band’s debut, eponymously titled LP in 2022.
  5. Smile At You by Fleetwood Mac. This is decent, though not classic, Fleetwood Mac from 2003’s Say You Will. Stevie in good vocal form.
  6. Runaway by The Zombies. Again, decent enough from the rock legends from 2023’s Different Game. Colin Blunstone still in good voice.
  7. Jack Of All Trades by Bruce Springsteen. The boss somewhere near top form from 2012’s Wrecking Ball.
  8. Police State by 808 State. Back to 1989 for this classic which basically screams IBIZA!
  9. See You In Prague by Graham Nash. This song is on Nash’s 1986 album Innocent Eyes, by some distance the worst record he ever made. Time to cull it from my collection? Dreadful.
  10. Baby Grand by Billy Joel ft. Ray Charles. A duet between Billy Joel and Ray Charles –  what could possibly go wrong? Well, this did.

A slightly underwhelming shuffle, I’m afraid. This week’s Desert Island Disc is Police State by 808 State, which reminds me of the days when we went to Ibiza and I was already too old to enjoy it.

Have a good week till next week.
