The Friday Music Shuffle (21.7.23)

Summer Special

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. Ten songs from my collection, chosen at random from my collection by my music device. So, why not listen, or even sing, along by clicking on the titles.

Hope you find something you like!

  1. Cabinessence by The Beach Boys. Fantastic song from 1967’s great unreleased album Smile, finally released in 2011. Maybe not what you might expect from the band.
  2. Working Classic (feat Yemi Bolatiwa) by Antony Smierek. Bang up to date for a modern classic.
  3. Thin Thong by The Smile. All the way back to 2022 for a joint from Thom Yorke’s excellent side project’s  A Light For Attracting Attention. Wonderful.
  4. Hearts and Bones by Paul Simon. Title track of Simon’s album from 1983 and obviously it’s brilliant.
  5. Hot City Symphony Part 1: Vambo by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Opening track from 1974’s Impossible Dream LP. Mad as a box of frogs, was old Alex, but this was one fine band.
  6. The Straight And The Narrow by Spiritualized. 2001’s Let It Come Down was a fine album and this is a good example of why.
  7. Tapioca Tundra by The Monkees. Back to 1968 when the boys were writing and playing their own songs. The album was The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees and this is a Mike Nesmith song.
  8. Blacknotes by Graham Nash and David Crosby. A very short little number from 1972.
  9. J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva) by Green Day. Back to 2001 for this rocker from International Superhits.
  10.  On The Wrong Side by Lindsey Buckingham. From his brilliant 2021 solo album called Lindsey Buckingham. Honestly, as good as anything he’s ever done and everything you hear is him. If this song doesn’t remind you of Go Your Own Way, where have you been hiding?

This week’s Desert Island Disc is Cabinessence by the Beach Boys.

Have a good week ’til next week.
