The Friday Music Shuffle (2.6.23)

Summer Special

by Rick Johansen

At long last, the meteorological summer has arrived, so what better than to embark on yet another music shuffle.

For one day only, my music device selects 10 songs from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. And if you want to listen or even sing along, all you need do is click on the song title.

So all you pop pickers, Hey Ho Let’s Go!

  1. Slam (live at Brixton Academy) by Pendulum. Call it Drum and Bass, call it Dance Rock, call it whatever you like. But you surely can’t deny it’s great?
  2. Repent Walpurgis by Procol Harum. Crikey. Back to 1967 we go for this excellent instrumental.
  3. Set To Attack by Albert J Hammond. From 2018’s brilliant LP Francis Trouble comes this great track from the Strokes man. Read the story of its meaning on the You Tube clip attached to the song title. Very emotional.
  4. Oh! You Pretty Things by David Bowie. Genius from 1971’s Hunky Dory, featuring the great Rick Wakeman on piano.
  5. With A Gun by Steely Dan. From 1974’s Pretzel Logic, here’s my favourite band ever with what sounds like a Country and Western song.
  6. Theme from Dr Kildare by Johnny Spence and his Orchestra. I shit you not. God knows which of my albums this is on! I think it is fantastic.
  7. Reason To Believe by Tim Hardin. The original and best version of this great song. Sorry, Rod. You’re nowhere near this level of greatness.
  8. Solo by Clean Bandit feat.Demi Lovato. Well, it’s great, innit?
  9. Kismet by Michael Head and the Red Elastic Band. From arguably his greatest album, 2020’s Dear Scott, the ex-Shack man can’t go wrong. Buy this record.
  10. Laughing by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A Crosby ‘bonus track’ from the 1992 pressing of 1972’s live classic 4 Way Street.

This week’s Desert Island Disc is the exciting number seven selection Tim Hardin’s Reason To Believe because, quite simply, it is a magnificent song.

That’s all, folks!
