Greetings pop-pickers, as we try to navigate the misery of the British winter.
In an attempt to lift the endless gloom, I have asked my music device to choose ten random songs from my collection and to then tell you what it’s chosen. All I ask you to do is click on the titles, turn the speakers up and listen along with me. There might even be summat you like.
Let’s rock!
- I Won’t Hold You Back by Toto. Back to 1982 for this Steve Lukather song from Toto IV. Features Eagle Timothy B. Schmit.
- Can You Help Me by Marmalade. Not sure about the background of this song which is on an old Marmalade compilation. But didn’t Dean Ford have a great blue eye soul singer voice? Triffic song.
- At My Window by The Beach Boys. Truly gorgeous song from 1970’s Sunflower LP, arguably their best group album. (Pet Sounds is basically Brian Wilson.) Bruce Johnston’s vocal is heavenly.
- I Get So Excited by Ian Hunter. Fantastic by the Mott the Hoople Man from his eponymous 1975 LP.
- Mr Spaceman by The Byrds. Great McGuinn tune from the superb 1966 LP Fifth Dimension.
- Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down by XTC. Back to 1980 and a joint from the excellent The Compact XTC.
- Rhapsody by Delays. The tragic and premature death of Aaron Gilbert deprived the world of the best voices in rock. This lovely song comes from the band’s brilliant 2010 LP Star Tiger Star Ariel.
- Destiny by Zero 7. Gorgeous chill out music from 2001’s Simple Things.
- Wild Fire Woman by Bad Company. A banger from 1975’s Straight Shooter.
- Behind Blue Eyes by The Who. Massively overrated in my view, the band nonetheless made one great album, 1971’s Who’s Next? from which this gem hails. Almost CSN in places.
Well, that was fun. This week’s Desert Island Disc is At My Window by The Beach Boys.
Have a good week till next week.
