Free lunch

by Rick Johansen

Some light in the dark, at long last. Let’s read these words from the actor Keanu Reeves:

I’m so happy to announce that my new cafeteria is now open—and the tab is on me. Whether you’re going through a tough time or just need a hot meal, please stop by. No judgment, no requirements, just a seat at the table for everyone.

Fair play, that man. Yes, he’s a fabulously rich man, but he doesn’t have to do this. Big respect?

No, not really. This is AI slop. It never happened. Like the recent AI slop about Neil Young many of you will have seen, where Old Shakey thanks his fans for their prayers as he recovers from a stage accident, accompanied by a photo of him in a hospital bed. That never happened, either, but as with with Keanu’s fake canteen, people shared it on social media anyway.

This is the modern version of a fake tradesman robbing a pensioner of her/his savings. People were amazed how pensioners fell for the scams but it’s not just pensioners falling for AI scams. We all are and I’ve done it, too, recently sharing a quote about Nigel Farage that wasn’t true.

This is going to get much worse. The future is already here and a lot of it is a lie. Don’t take my word for it: ask Keanu Reeves when you visit his café.

PS The vast majority of people who commented on his post on threads believed it.
