Can’t Get It Out Of My Head

by Rick Johansen

Anyone who remembers Poland’s invasion of Germany in 1939, with empathise with Donald Trump’s wise words about Ukraine’s war with Russia. “You should have never been there. You should never have started it,” explained the most powerful appeaser on Earth. Ukraine was the aggressor as a result of being invaded by fascist Russia. Of course. Why didn’t we realise this before?

I certain’t haven’t written about this subject since – oh, let me think – yesterday but I just can’t get it out of my head. The actual president is now literally on the side of fascist Russia. Trump is cosying up to war criminal, a KGB thug, a man who has his opponents killed, whether they are at home in Russia or abroad.

When Trump says, “Why didn’t you make a deal?” he means “Why didn’t you surrender? What on Earth possessed you to stand up to Nazis as they invaded your country?” It’s almost as if they don’t believe in freedom and democracy. But hang on: they actually don’t.

Key Trump supporter Peter Thiel actually said as much: “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible,” he declared. “If one is forced to choose between freedom and democracy, I don’t see any moral choice but to choose freedom.”

Of course, no one is forced to choose between freedom and democracy, but that’s not what the far right in America actually mean. To them, the idea that people should have some say in how their country is governed is an anathema. Democracy merely gets in the way of the super rich, especially the so-called Tech Bros, who seek to be able to do what they want, especially to further enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else. That’s a very weird freedom, isn’t it, where some people are more free than others. Being denied a vote to change politics clearly doesn’t fit in with Thiel, Trump, Musk and co’s vision for America first, by which they mean Tech Bros first.

In inviting fascist Russia to the table, by inviting mass murderer, war criminal Vladimir Putin to meet on equal terms is, I repeat, appeasement. It also conveys a terrible weakness that will further enable Putin to attempt to further extend Russia’s boundaries well into his neighbours’ territory. No one, surely, believes that bringing back Putin from the cold will somehow diminish his powers? Trump’s brainlessness and his sheer weakness has been a huge win for the Kremlin.

Trump’s idiocy knows no limits. He now demands that Ukraine has fresh elections on the spurious grounds that Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presidential mandate expired last year, as if he is no longer supported by Ukrainians. Trump alleges, with no evidence, that only 4% of Ukrainians support their president. What a happy coincidence that Russia too has made these claims against Zelenskyy. It is almost as if Trump actually supports Putin. As a fellow fascist, why would he not?

Poland didn’t invade Germany, which led to WW2, so let’s not be stupid and pretend that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was Ukraine’s fault. See it for what it is. It’s fascism and if we sit still and do nothing, it could be us next.
